Former Hon. Member, House of Representatives, Hon. Zakari Muhammad has stated that journalism has not only directly but positively imparted in stabilising Nigeria’s democracy but also contributed to the country’s economic development.

even Zakari who made this known at an intellectual interaction with stakeholders in the media industry organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Kwara Television Chapel, said “unfortunately, journalists are not getting commensurate patronage from governments across the country”.
According to Hon. Zakari, whose paper was presented by a former chairman, NUJ, Lagos State Council, Wahab Oba, “the institution of journalism plays a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria`s democratic system and to effectively fulfil this role, journalists must report the news objectively”.
Hon. Zakari urged journalists to remain consistently objective in order to command respect from governments and the citizenry.
” There’s urgent need for an internal ombudsman to check the spate of quackery in journalism which dent the integrity of the industry”.
Currently, he alleged, journalism does not have the legal tooth to bite and call its members to order.
Also speaking, a former commissioner of information in the state and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Raheem Adedoyin, urged journalists to be more circumspect in their reportage. “Governments will always respect journalists if they are proffessional”, Adedoyin said.
“It is unfortunate that many make themselves willing tools that can be used and dumped”, he remarked
