Kwara Assembly Worries Over Hike On Food Price, Urges Gov’t To Encourage Farmers.

The Kwara State House of Assembly has expressed worry over hike on price of food items and other essential commodities in the markets, called on the state government to put in place price control mechanism to end perennial inflation.
This followed a Motion on Notice on Tuesday’s plenary, titled “Need to Control High Cost of Food Items in Kwara State” moved by a lawmaker representing Kaiama-Kamanje-Wajibe Constituency, Hon Abdullahi Halidu Danbaba.
Danbaba expressed concern over the incessant increase in food items which he said has led to hunger in the society and as well triggered frustration among the citizens.
The lawmaker who attributed the inflation to insecurity ravaging the nation, said farmers are no longer safe to go to farm for usual business of land cultivation for food production.
On the contrary, Hon. Owolabi Olatunde Razaq, representing Share/Oke-Ode Constituency opined that the inflation is as a result of corruption among the market men and women, stressing that the traders make use of all opportunities and seasons to exploit buyers particularly during the period of Ramadan.
Owolabi said “People blame corruption on politicians alone where as “corruption is imbedded in the heart of every individual. Imagine a landlord of a 4 bedroom bungalow who bypasses through his metre and stopped it from reading, using electricity for free is also a this corruption.
“We must examine ourselves as citizen and locate areas we are retrogressing our state and nation at large so as to make amendments for our society to be a better place” he said.
The House Leader, Hon. Magaji Olawoyin and Chairman House Committee on Agriculture, Hon. Ojo Oyebode in their respective encouraged everyone to go back to the farm to boost food production which according to them is the only way to end inflation in food stuff.
Other lawmakers in their contributions charged food stuff dealers to desist from unnecessary inflation of foodstuff prices particularly during this period of holy month of Ramadan.


Reading the resolutions of the House, Speaker Yakubu Salihu Danladi urged the government to encourage massive food production by providing incentives for farmers in the state through farm inputs.
Danladi urged the government to direct weigh and measure unit of the Ministry of Enterprise to rise to its responsibility of regulating prices of goods and services in the state.


He mandated House Committee on Commerce, Industry, Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with the Ministry of Enterprise to interface with the leadership of market Associations with a view to addressing issues involved.
