Kwara State House of Assembly has appealed to road users to comply with traffic regulations while charging agents of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority, (KWARTMA) to be proactive on duty for efficient service delivery.
This followed a ‘Motion on Notice’ titled “Need For Road Users To Comply with Traffic Regulations For Optimum Performance of Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority Officials on Duty” sponsored by member representing Ilorin East Constituency, Hon. Jimoh Ali Yusuf during today’s plenary
Ali Yusuf said, in spite of the onerous task of road traffic management and control, motorists and other road users in the state do not accord perssonnel of KWARTMA the required cooperation that will improve their function.
He worried that, if KWARTMA fails in the performance of its statutory function, there would always be break down of law and order among motorists and other road users which can defeat the motive behind its establishment.
A co-sponsor of the motion, Hon. Halidu Danbaba (Kaiama-Kemanje-Wojibe Constituency), charged KWARTMA to be alive to its responsibilities towards effective traffic management,
Danbaba tasked the agency to replicate the activities of Lagos State Road Traffic Management Authority, (LASMA) in the state so as to record massive succes as of Lagos.
Deputy Speaker Adetiba Raphael (Oke-Ero Constituency) submited that the number of KWARTMA is grossly inadequate while soliciting for more staff in the agency for adequate performance.
Adetiba said KWARTMA’s activities should not be limited to Ilorin metropolis, as areas like Omu-Aran, Offa, Ganmo, Baruten among others also require traffic management.
Hon. Mohammed Baba Saliu of Okuta/Yashikira Constituency in his contribution noted that the increase in traffic is as a result of the relative peace in the state compared to other state in the federation, urging residents to always cooperate with the personnel for optimum performance .
Reading the resolutions of the House, Speaker Yakubu Salihu Danladi urged the Chief Executive Officer of KWARTMA to consider deployment of personnel for evening duties particularly in places within Ilorin metropolis and other major cities of the state.
Danladi called on motorists and other road users in the state to cooperate with personnel of the agency in the performance of their official duties and functions on the roads.
The Soeaker commended the Governor for the gracious approval of the redeployment of staff of the defunct Kwara Express to KWARTMA.
He also implored the state government to engage in more sensitization of the public through the media, especially radio on the functions and powers of KWARTMA in controlling road traffic and other connected matters
