Man Weeps Inconsolably After Sentenced To Death For Kidnapping Four-Year Old Boy

On Thursday, November 25, a man referred to as Ekerete Ukpong in Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, wept inconsolably after a State High Court sitting in Ikot Ekpene sentenced him to death for kidnapping a four-year old boy.

According to Justice Augustine Odokwo, the presiding judge, the prosecuting counsel had informed the court that Success Amos Kalu, the four-year old victim, who hailed from Abia State, was yet to be found since his abduction on September 25, 2015 at Ibiakpan Akananwan area of Ikot Ekpene.

The judge held that the court found the accused guilty, a crime punishable by death as contained under Section 1 of Akwa Ibom State Internal Security and Enforcement Law, 2009.

The judge, who condemned the spike of kidnapping throughout Nigeria, called on everyone to contribute in tackling the menace.

In sentencing the defendant, the judge said:

“The convict is to take the punishment alone even though records show that he acted in collaboration with other persons who now appear to be at large.”

He added that the judgement should serve as a deterrent to everyone else, that the full weight of the law will descend on kidnappers.

“I have studied Section 1 [2] of Akwa Ibom State Internal Security and Enforcement Law 2009. It is the section that prescribes the punishment for the offence of kidnapping. That section of the Law recommends only one punishment. In the circumstance, I will follow only the law and nothing else but the law. The sentence of this Court against the convict is death,” said the judge.

He further said: “His Excellency, the Akwa Ibom State Governor will determine the means and the appropriate place for execution within Akwa Ibom State.”

Before the sentence was passed, the judge changed to a black cap with the convict weeping inconsolably before the latter was whisked away from the court by officials of Nigerian Prison Service, Ikot Ekpene.
