Oniyangi Launches NGO On Women Awareness, Learning Initiative

A former commissioner of education and human capital development in Kwara State Hajia Bilkisu Oniyangi has advised government at all levels to invest more in the women especially in the North as parts of efforts in developing the country.
She made the call at the formal launching of a non governmental organization, foundation for women awareness and learning initiative in Ilorin the Kwara state capital.

Oniyangi who explained that the foundation was established specifically to address the key developmental issues that affect women and children in Northern Nigeria.
According to her “FOWALI, is a necessity after a long waiting for decades about the importance of gender equality, and while we talk the situation of women’ and girls in the northern Nigeria is at risk of further deterioration.
” We know that gender based violence and violence against women continues to destroy the lives of women and girls across our geographic zones, we are also aware that women’s rates of empowerment in our communities is at a zero level.
“This demonstrates the roll back effect that has worsen the women access to opportunities and public space deepens their sense of isolation,” she said.
Highlighting some of the barriers, like early marriages, sexual harassment, maternal death among others which she said impact on their progression to adulthood and prevent them from contributing positively within the society.
“At FOWALI, our inventions is to build resilience through the provision of assets skills, jobs dignity and protection for the Northern women. It is important to note that if we do not take special measures to target and include women in resilience and stabilization effort, women are at risk of being further left behind”, she stated.
Earlier in her remarks a lecturer in the department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ilorin, Dr. Olaifa Folashade Helen, advised women to strive to be self sufficient inorder to be a respected member of the public.
