Portholes: Karumo Residents Appeal For Roads Reconstruction

Karumo community is one of the density populated communities located at Oja-Gboro, Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.

According to the findings of our reporters, the leading to the community was constructed by previous administration in the state, indicating that the road needs rehabilitation for the easy road users.

Lamenting on the poor state of road, one of the traders who is into palm oil business in the area Iya Ali complaining that the road said she has been trade in karumo for the past 20 years.

She pointed out that karumo road has been damaged for about 10 years and several government officers keep coming for survey as different administrations promises reconstruction but nothing was done.

She explained that the portholes have led to the most of accidents in the area, because motorcyclists, tricycles, privates and commercial drivers while trying to avoid portholes led to accident.
Sometimes, the lane provided for pedestrians are used by motorcycles which most times caused causing accidents as the accident led to to permanent handicapped.

She disclosed that recently, a motorcyclist who was trying to avoiding the portholes hit a pregnant woman who was walking on the pedestrian lane which got her into premature delivery of the baby and rushed to the hospital for the safety of woman and pregnant.

She implored the state government to reconstruct of karumo road to avoid further accidents and for better and easy movement of pedestrians and safe transportation vehicles.

Also speaking with our reporters, a phone repairer in the community, Alhaji Ibrahim Adeniyi who claimed to been operating his business within the community for the past thirteen years also said karumo road has been damaged for the past 6 years and no government cares about it.

He explained that Kwara State Road Maintenance Agency (KWARMA) engineers has once came to patch part of the road and after few months it get spoiled again especially during the rainy seasons.

Ibrahim stressed that it is the Youth of Karumo Community Developmental Association that shouldered the responsibility of sand filling the portholes when it get worse to avoid road accidents, lamenting that at times it washed away after some while.

He solicited for the government urgent attention on reconstruction of the road bto help the karumo community by reconstructing there raid so as to avoid accidents.

A commercial motorcyclist, Mallam Ajadi olanrewaju also implored the government to reconstruct the road as it had been overdue for reconstruction due to the regular incident of accidents on the road.

He further urged the state government to as quickly as possible to listening to the people’s appeal on the reconstruction of the road as dry season is set in.
